No Gun Chewing in Chicago Courts

By |May 23rd, 2016|Categories: Blog, Funny|

I love it when I find funny stuff on the Internet. I was researching the dress code for a particular court in Chicago (it's for a blog post, not for me!) and the court's website says that there's no gun-chewing in the courtroom. Really. That's taking gun control to a whole new level.

My SEO Experiment: Update

By |May 5th, 2016|Categories: Blog, Blogging, Cool Stuff, SEO, Website Copy|

Three days ago, on May 2, 2016, I published a page on my site called "What Animal Eats Begonias?" because I wanted to show that ranking for an exact-match, long-tail keyword is super-easy... if you know what you're doing. Just three days later (admittedly, I forgot about it until just now or I'd have checked yesterday and the day before), my website is in 6th place in the organic search [...]

Which vs. That

By |April 13th, 2016|Categories: Blog|

Use which when a sentence could stand alone without what comes after the word: She went to the grocery store, which wasn't her favorite thing to do on a Friday afternoon. Use that when a sentence needs what comes after the word. Gorillas that eat lettuce are stronger than those that don't.

Unsolicited Marketing… UGH!

By |April 6th, 2016|Categories: Blog|

How I look at my computer when I get unsolicited marketing emails I get unsolicited marketing emails all day, every day - almost as frequently as my cell phone rings with a telemarketer on the other end. (That's seriously out of control.) It made me wonder how many business owners are resorting to making unsolicited contact with potential customers. Don't. Just don't. I put these people on my blocklist so their [...]

New Book on the Way!

By |April 4th, 2016|Categories: Blog, Cool Stuff|

I've had to turn down a lot of new clients lately, but there's a trade-off for me: I'm working on a new For Dummies book that's coming out in February 2017. It's pretty exciting, because in the past, I've worked as a technical editor on many of them (such as ASVAB For Dummies, ASVAB AFQT For Dummies, and 1,001 ASVAB AFQT Practice Questions For Dummies. This time, it's going to have [...]

How to Make a Link Open in a New Page if Your Site is Hosted by Zola Creative Media

By |March 15th, 2016|Categories: Blog, SEO|

If your site is hosted by Zola Creative Media and you need to add content with links embedded, you'll need to format your links correctly within the template in order to get them to open in a new window. Naturally, it's always a good idea to have your links open in a new tab or a new window entirely; that way, you won't risk losing your site's visitors when they [...]

VeteranOwnedBusiness.com: Selling Spam Links to Veterans (Don’t Fall for It)

By |March 9th, 2016|Categories: Blog, Link Directories, SEO|

As I was cruising Facebook this morning, someone asked me to elaborate on a comment I'd made on a link directory's sponsored post. I don't want to point any fingers (not really, anyway), but people who attempt to take advantage of veterans without caring about the consequences really piss me off. What is VeteranOwnedBusiness.com Doing to Vets? Here's my take on what this Veteran Owned Business Directory is doing. They're getting thousands [...]
